Undergraduate and Graduate Students Win Numerous Awards

This year, we have again a large group of students, from undergraduate to graduate students, who have won awards for their work, prestigious scholarships to go abroad, awards to do research, or have secured important positions.
Departmental Awards
- Sarah Priscilla Lee: Departmental Honors
- William Frank Kobin received the Géza von Mólnar Essay Award (German)
- Gordon Alexander Schlicht received the Géza von Mólnar Essay Award (German)
- Payton Carroll Danner received the Géza von Mólnar Essay Award (English)
- Sofia Sojo Rivera received the Géza von Mólnar Essay Award (English)
- Alice Wei was selected for Outstanding Achievement in Second-Year German
- Sabrina A Matsuda was selected for Outstanding Achievement in Second-Year German
- Evan Christopher Augeri was selected for Outstanding Achievement in First-Year German
University or External Awards
- Britt Alexander Jordan won a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship!
- Gabriela Dago won both the Austrian Teaching Assistantship and was selected to participate in the 2017-2018 Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX), and will be a CBYX fellow next year.
- Sarah Priscilla Lee received the Northern Illinois AATG (American Association for Teachers of German) Collegiate Award for Excellence in German 2017 for Northwestern University!
- Alex Herz won an undergraduate research fellowship to do research on German-Jewish film in Berlin this summer.
- Mingxia Lim received the Helen G. Scott Prize for Best Critical Essay on Literary Criticism & Theory for his essay on "Confronting the Present: Depictions of Millennial Berlin in Contemporary German Film."
Graduate Student Awards, Fellowships and Position Announcements
- Nadav Avruch is returning to campus in the fall of 2017 after having completed fellowships with the Paris Program in Critical Theory, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the Minerva Foundation
- Sandra participated in both the 2016 and 2017 versions of the innovative Tri-University Consortium, which brings together an interdisciplinarygroup of graduate students from Northwestern, the École Normale Supérieure-Paris, and the Goethe University-Frankfurt.
- Wiebke Bullermann will be spending the fall quarter in Berlin conducting research.
- Jan Cao is moving to Paris for the next academic year as a fellow in the Paris Program in Critical Theory.
- Hector Feliciano was granted a three-year DAAD fellowship for the continuation of his studies at the University of Münster, where he will pursue a dual-degree program.
- Sabrina Jaromin won a Graduate School/SEARLE grant for the development of a First- Year Seminar “Animals in Modernity.” She is also participating in the Tri-University Consortium in Frankfurt.
- Sonia Li’s essay, “Violence and Ventriloquism in J. M. Coetzee's Disgrace,” was accepted for publication in the prestigious journal Mosaic.
- Jonas Rosenbrück is also participating in the Tri-University Consortium in Frankfurt and will be spending next year as a fellow in the Paris Program in Critical Theory.
- After spending the first year of a multiyear fellowship at the ICI-Berlin, Benjamin Robinson accepted a four-year assistantship at the University of Vienna.
- Saein Park will be joining the faculty of the German department at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in the Fall 2017.
- Henrik Wilberg became an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota, Morris.
- Clemens Ackermann has accepted a position as the program coordinator of the California State/Baden-Württemberg Student Exchange.
