Scholarships, Grants and Funding
Students in German have traditionally been extremely successful in their application for DDA or Fulbright grants. Early planning and early application is essential, however. Below is a list of some of the grant opportunities our students regularly apply. Please also check the website of the Office of Fellowships for additional suggestions.
- DAAD Undergraduate Scholarships
Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany. Scholarships are available either as part of an organized study abroad program or as part of an individual, student-designed study abroad semester or year.
- DAAD University Summer Course Grant
This program provides scholarships to attend a broad range of three- to four-week summer courses at German universities which focus mainly on German language and literary, cultural, political and economic aspects of modern and contemporary Germany.
- Intensive Language Courses in German
- DAAD German Studies Research Grant
This specialized DAAD program offers German Studies Research Grants to highly-qualified undergraduate and graduate students who are nominated by their department/program chairs. The grant may be used for short-term research (one to two months) in Germany.
- DAAD Study Scholarships
Highly qualified final year undergraduate students (graduating seniors) or those who have received an undergraduate degree of all disciplines may apply for the DAAD Study Scholarship for a year of independent study or a full master's degree program at a German university.

- DAAD Bundestag Internship
Offers internship opportunities for US and Canadian students in the German parliament, the Bundestag.
- DAAD RISE (Research Internships in Science & Engineering)
RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering.
- Summer Undergraduate Language Grants
These grants provide up to $5,000 (up to 75% of total expenses) towards the cost of intensive summer language study either in the US or abroad. The program’s goal is to fund students for whom this language training is central to the achievement of specific academic or professional goals.
- Max Kade Travel Grants
Through the generosity of the Max Kade Foundation, the Department of German is pleased to offer $1000 travel scholarships for eligible undergraduate students in order to provide financial support for study abroad programs organized by Northwestern University.Preference will be given to students with financial need who are applying for the nine-week summer program “Berlin: Global City in the Center of Europe.”
- Summer Internship Grant Program
Administered by Northwestern Career Advancement, the Summer Internship Grant Program (SIGP) supports students participating in unpaid internships. Primarily for students who have an unpaid internship or summer experience in an industry that traditionally does not pay their interns. However, it is also a career development program to enrich important learning opportunities as students engage in summer experiences.
