Curriculum Vitae

Katrin Völkner is a Lecturer in the German Department. She studied at the Freie Universität Berlin and received her MA in German from Washington University in St. Louis and her Ph.D. in German Studies from Duke University. She currently is the Coordinator of Intermediate German and directs the Business German program.
Other courses she has taught include 19th century German Literature, Popular Culture in the 20th Century, and Current Events and the German Media. She received the Northwestern Alumni Teaching Award Honorable Mention in 2008.

In her teaching, she is particularly interested in how best to integrate a variety of media and technologies, such as social networking sites and iPod technology, into the curriculum. Her research on the history of reading and processes of popularization inform her thinking about the transmission of knowledge in the classroom. Publications and presentations on popular and consumer culture and innovative teaching approaches reflect these interests.

At Northwestern, she serves on the Council on Language Instruction (CLI) and the Chicago Field Studies Committee. She is also one of the co-founders of The Public Square (www.thepublicsquare.org), an organization that promotes participatory democracy and creates spaces for public conversations.
