MAJORING AND MINORING IN GERMAN

Both, the Major and Minor in German are highly flexible programs designed to introduce students to the civilization of the German-speaking people and allow for selection of various concentrations. This curriculum will give students a highly marketable background for a career in international law, international trade, or the foreign service, and should be of special interest to students pursuing an adjunct major in International Studies or Business Institutions.

Students majoring in German will complete twelve (12) core courses in German language, literature, culture, and history and three (3) units in their chosen concentration for a total of 15 courses. Students minoring in German will complete nine (9) courses in German language, literature, culture, history; or business German.

Only courses beyond 100-level German can count for the Major or Minor. The prerequisite for enrolling in any 200-level German course is the completion of the last quarter of Intermediate German (102-3) with a grade of C- or better - or the equivalent thereof - for example, achieving a score of "4" or better on the Advanced Placement German Language Examination; or receiving official exemption from 100-level courses based on the German Placement Exam.

Majors returning from a study abroad program in their junior year must enroll in at least one (1) 300-level quarter course in the German Department. Minors returning from a study abroad program in their junior year must enroll in at least one (1) 300-level quarter course in the German Department.

If you have questions about majoring or minoring in German, or would like to apply for a major or minor, contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the German Department, Franziska Lys at 491-8298 (or e-mail her). You should always consult with the Director of Undergraduate Studies to obtain permission for course substitutions, to help you choose courses to graduate in time, and to fill out the petition to graduate.

Studying German abroad
Students studying abroad in a German speaking country may apply to have their work count towards the German Major or German Minor. The department may accept up to eight courses in German for a full year abroad, up to four courses for a semester abroad if you are majoring in German (half of that if you are minoring) and up to two courses for a summer abroad.
