FULFILLING THE WCAS LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

To fulfill or satisfy the WCAS Language Proficiency Requirement in German or to enroll in German classes for the first time, please follow the instructions below. If you have ...

... a score of 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement German Examination (AP Exam):

Congratulations! You have satisfied the WCAS Language Proficiency Requirement in German. To continue your studies in German, you may place yourself into a 200-level or 300-level class. Please contact Franziska Lys (phone: 847-491-8298; e-mail flys@northwestern.edu) or any other faculty member in German for advice on enrolling in German courses or for advice on choosing a German Major or Minor.

Great! You will only need one more course to satisfy the WCAS Language Proficiency Requirement in German. You may place yourself into one of the following four courses:

  • 102-3 Intermediate German (only given in the Spring)
  • 211 German Film or 221-3 Introduction to German Literature
  • 205-1 or 205-2 Intermediate Grammar and Composition

... had just one year of High School German or never learned any German before:

Welcome to the German Language Program. You will need six courses to satisfy the WCAS Language Proficiency Requirement in German. You may place yourself into 101-1 Beginning German (Fall Quarter).


IMPORTANT
All other incoming or transfer students who intend to register for a German course (either to satisfy the WCAS Language Proficiency Requirement or to simply continue studying German), MUST take the German Placement Exam before being allowed to register for any German course at Northwestern University.
